|
Exclusive CWC Keynote Address
Monday, Feb. 6
10:15-11:30 a.m.

Just like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, we are asked to lead our schools and centers into a future that can sometimes be uncertain and filled with challenges. So how does vision come about? How do we get others to share our vision? How do we discover and follow that yellow brick road? We’re off to see our wizard!
Marlene Lund serves as the Executive Director of Wheat Ridge Ministries’ Center for Urban Education Ministries. In 1974, Lund began her teaching career after graduating from Cortland State University, New York. She immediately began advanced studies and earned her Master of Arts in education from Hunter College in New York. She received her second master’s in counseling education at New York University in 1986.
Lund continued her career as Principal at Queens Lutheran School and in 1992 was awarded the National Distinguished Principal Award by the U.S. Department of Education. She served as Executive Director of the Lutheran Schools Association from 1992-2009, serving Lutheran schools and early childhood centers in the greater metropolitan New York area. Keynote: Mighty River, Deep and Wide
Ted Peters |
General Conference Keynote Address
Tuesday, Feb. 7
11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. |
Like the Mighty Mississippi River flowing from Minnesota through the center of the country into the Gulf of Mexico and eventually blending with the oceans of the world, the ongoing mission of the Lutheran Reformation is an unstoppable flow. What wells up from the depths is the Gospel, the proclamation that the one true God is gracious; and we can now live grace-filled lives. Spreading wide like a delta, Lutheran institutions and hybrid programs invite the world’s thirsty to drink. Those of us who rally support need to map the flow, to lift up a vision of where this river of divine grace is carrying us.
Ted Peters is a professor of Systematic Theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, Calif.
He is author of GOD-The World’s Future (Fortress 2000); Science, Theology, and Ethics (Ashgate 2003) and Sin: Radical Evil in Soul and Society (Eerdmans 1994). He is Editor-in-Chief of Dialog: A Journal of Theology. He also serves as Co-Editor of Theology and Science, published by the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences in Berkeley.
Ted Peters’ teaching portfolio includes the field of theology in the 20th and 21st centuries for both doctoral level students and for students preparing to serve in the ordained clergy.
He is a Lutheran theologian — an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — teaching in an ecumenical institution with students from an array of differing denominations, and he engages in inter-religious dialogue, as well.

Evangelization and outreach are the “holy grail” for many congregations with schools and centers, yet often the goal of parish growth seems elusive if not impossible. Often neglected in addressing this challenge is the crucial role of school staff and teachers as partners in ministry and mission.
In this workshop, Hurst will address obstacles and opportunities in embracing the vocation of teachers and staff in Christ’s mission, and will offer practical ideas for inviting and equipping them as partners in the work of making Christ known among the children and families we serve.
