Avoiding the Whirlpools in Deep Waters – CEOs & CAOs Working Better Together!

Rick Torgerson & Keith Christensen

Senior Level

You may be the Chief Advancement Officer/Vice President for development at your organization, but if your Chief Executive Officer/President is not leading and involved in the development process, perhaps your organization may not be functioning as well as it can. Hear from a team — Vice President for Development and President — that has been functioning together in this role for over a decade, and learn from their expectations, stories and successes. Keith Christensen and Rick Torgerson from Luther College both brought their years of experience together at Luther College and will share how the transition went when first working together, what expectations each position has of the other and thoughts on how you can develop a healthy working relationship together with your organization’s leadership, too.

Incorporating Planned Giving Into Your Capital Campaign

Joe Gillmer
Entry Level

Successful capital campaigns result from having a well-balanced fundraising strategy that includes offering donors a variety of means to provide support beyond writing checks. Planned gifts can add tremendous value, but need to be sought in a manner that fulfills the campaign goals for capital and endowment projects. Join CCS' Joe Gillmer for a discussion on how a planned giving program can complement and enhance your campaign strategy while strengthening long-term relationships with donors. Session participants will:

• Review the concept of planned giving and its role in a campaign;
• Discuss common planned giving tools;
• Learn about the planned giving resources that are available and
• Strategize fictional scenarios and real examples from fellow participants

Please note, this had been the session with John O’Gorman, but John is no longer able to present.  So Joe, another expert from CCS, will be able to join us.

Fiduciary Duty: A Simple Review of a Complex Topic That is Important for Your Donors and Endowment Funds

Nate Birkholz

All Levels

The fiduciary standard became a frequent discussion point following the market crash in 2008. Although the standard has a complex political and legal history, its origin and its practical application are simple and straightforward. Endowment funds and gifts to nonprofits should be managed according to the fiduciary standard. As new regulations seek to define the standard, there is risk of confusion and dilution of the high degree of care that is required by the fiduciary standard. The fiduciary standard is a complex topic that can be simply explained. We are all familiar with the moral and ethical basis for this standard and can understand the larger topic from this foundation. Ultimately, a good understanding of the fiduciary standard will allow advancement professionals to give donors the confidence that gifts are managed to this high standard.
