Collaborative Fund Development -- Taking Your program to New Heights (formerly Major Gifts and Planned Giving, Partners or Adversaries?)

Mark Weinrich
Mid Level
When should a major gift prospect or donor be solicited for a deferred gift? When and how should planned giving be introduced to annual fund donors? How can a planned gift prospect include an outright gift as part of his or her planned gift? Do planned gifts and major gifts compete or complement each other? How can development teams be used to build stronger relationships and more effective solicitations? Institutions with a fund development model that treat annual, major and deferred gifts as allies rather than competitors are likely to increase their comprehensive fund development results, which help build stronger collaborative relationships among staff. This session will discuss ways annual, major and planned gifts can work together bringing about greater results through collaborative fundraising efforts.

Is Your Organization a Destination or Way Station?

Kathy Hansen
Senior Level
Join other senior professionals in examining how to attract and retain first-rate development and communications professionals. Are there generational differences that affect how we work with different employees? How can we, even in a small shop, creatively plan a career path for younger professionals? What is the role of compensation in attracting and retaining excellent staff? What factors cause excellent professionals to turn down higher pay in order to stay put? Come prepared to share your ideas and experiences with other senior executives in the field.

Quality: It Won’t Happen by Accident or Good Intentions

Les Stroh
ALSS

Quality was touted and explored extensively in the last half of the 20th century in American organizational life. While many leaders think of "quality" as a fad that has come and gone, "quality" is still vitally important to organizations desiring to be strong and striving to be true to those they serve. Participants in this workshop will explore the necessity of intentionally pursuing quality in organizational life and not simply leaving it up to good intentions or the assumption that good people, doing their best, will produce quality.

It’s All Good

John Nunes
All Levels
Leaders are custodians of hope and cantors for a preferred future, especially when the indicators seem to invite despair – as they surely do in times of economic complexity and uncertainty.

We are called by a good word, a bene dictum, a God-Word that turns us God-ward and moves us forward through organizational death-valleys, living effectively and realistically with an indomitably positive worldview.

Nunes will tell us why he believes that through it all, it’s still all good.

Big Battles vs. Little Battles - Picking and Choosing Where People’s Hearts Are and Where They Are Willing to Put Their Money

Kenneth Klaus
All Levels
Robert Burns said: "The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley." While we might rightfully object to the idea of Development as being a “scheme,” there is little doubt some of our plans gang aft agley. Which is just another way of saying, more than a few of the programs which we pray will be “Up… Up… and The Way” are received by a public who wishes those programs would go far, far away.
In this workshop, Pastor Klaus will try to help participants develop a sprachgefuhl for the less measurable aspects of selecting and implementing a program. Practical topics which will be touched upon include (but are not limited to):

• WILL IT PLAY IN PEORIA – Old vaudevillians knew if an act was able to succeed, to play in Peoria, it would be a success anywhere. Is there such a place, such a group, such an individual who might enable us to accurately anticipate a program’s success or failure?

• “BAMBI, YOUR MOTHER CAN’T BE WITH YOU ANYMORE.” You remember that line and the tears it produced. It was a sad moment … it evoked a response … and it was also a cartoon designed to produce a reaction. What did the Disney artists do right … what did they do wrong … what can we learn? What are the themes which tug on the heart-strings, which leave a lasting and moving memory?

• YOU’VE GOT TO KNOW WHEN TO HOLD ‘EM; KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM. There are moments when we, without claiming the gift of prophecy, can predict with reasonable accuracy that a program is not going to fly. We know, but very seldom does anybody ask for our opinion. Is there a time when we are compelled to take a stand? Is there a way to take that stand and increase our effectiveness and our survival?

• FROM GHOULIES AND GHOSTIES AND LONG LEGGEDY BEASTIES. Those words, part of a Scotch prayer, are an interpretation of St. Paul’s statement: “We fight not against flesh and blood.” What are and what will be the future enemies against which the Savior and His people will be fighting? How can we put a face on that enemy so they might be summoned to take a stand?
