Welcome Event ~ World Forestry Center ~ Saturday, February 12, 6:30 p.m.
The 2011 Welcome Event will take place at the World Forestry Center.
The 20,000 square foot museum is located in Portland's beautiful Washington Park. Built in dramatic Cascadian style architecture, you'll marvel at the intricate hand carvings and grand entry outside, and delight in all new exhibits inside.
The World Forestry Center will be an excellent backdrop to a fun night of tasty food and great fellowship with wonderful friends! You won't want to miss out.
Find out more about the museum at http://worldforestry.org/
The museum reopened on June 30, 2005, after a $7 million, 6-month renovation. All new hands-on, interactive exhibits are family friendly and designed to engage visitors to learn about the sustainability of forests and trees of the Pacific Northwest and around the world.

2011 Conference Worship: “Deeply Rooted!”
“Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
What an incredible theme for our 2011 ALDE International Educational Conference! What an incredible theme for our worship together throughout the conference! We will experience four different facets of our conference theme in four very different worship experiences. Our opening worship at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, February 12, sensitive to everyone’s travel fatigue, will be an experience of God’s warm and gentle embrace for all attendees. Focusing on the theme “Deeply Rooted in a United Mission and Ministry,” our preacher will be Dr. Phyllis Anderson, President of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Oakland (pictured right), with Rev. David Brauer-Rieke, Bishop of the ELCA Oregon Synod, serving as liturgist.
Sunday morning, February 13, at 8:15 will be our conference festival worship featuring the Concordia University Portland Choir and Brass Ensemble. Our theme for this celebration of God’s grace is “Deeply Rooted in Our Connection to Christ!” Dr. Dale Meyer, President of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and past speaker of the Lutheran Hour (pictured right), will preach and Rev. Paul Linnemann, LCMS Northwest District President, will serve as liturgist.
This year we are adding a worship experience to our conference. On Monday evening, February 14, at 5:45 p.m. we will celebrate Matry Haugen’s Holden Evening Prayer. This setting of Vespers was written for and dedicated to the Lutheran community at Holden Village in Washington state – and so we see this service as a gift of grace truly reflecting the Northwest. The theme for this time of worship is “Deeply Rooted to Grow Abundantly.” Rev. Laurie Larson Caesar, pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Ore. (pictured left), will preach and Rev. John Reutter-Harrah, pastor of Prince of Life Lutheran Church in Oregon City, Ore., will serve as liturgist. Prince of Life Lutheran Church will also provide the musicians for this service.
Finally, the Sending Service for our conference will be Tuesday, February 15, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Ted Moeller, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Vancouver, Wash., will preach and Andrew Potsko, DCE at Peace Lutheran Church in Seattle (pictured right), will serve as worship leader. The style for this time of worship will be Taize/Contemplative Contemporary, focusing on the theme “Deeply Rooted, Wonderfully Blessed!” How we look forward to experiencing God’s presence and God’s grace together in all four of these worship experiences! See you in February!!!
Servant Event: Loaves & Fishes Center
Feed your spirit and serve the people of God by offering your time and talents at the conference Servant Event. This year, we will be teaming up with Loaves & Fishes Centers. Since 1970, Loaves & Fishes Centers, The Meals-On-Wheels People, has been committed to feeding the growing need in our community by enriching the lives of seniors and assisting them in maintaining independence by making nutritious food, social contacts and other resources easily accessible. We accomplish this through an organization that is community based, emphasizes volunteer involvement and is financially sound.
Last year, more than 7,000 volunteers provided 1.4 million meals to seniors in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties. These dedicated volunteers deliver meals to homebound seniors as part of our Meals-On-Wheels program, help with food preparation at our central kitchen in Multnomah Village and serve seniors who dine in one of our 33 centers throughout the tri-county area. Our vision to ensure that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation is made possible through countless hours of volunteer labor, a dedicated staff and generous donors.
